Job Description

Security Assistant

This position is to ensure adequate equipping and funding for Security Forces mission and training requirements.

Opening and closing dates: July 9, 2025 to July 16, 2025

Salary: $49,960 - $64,952 per year

Location: Few vacancies in Sheppard AFB, TX

This position is not remote but is telework eligible as determined by the agency policy. Occasional travel may be required.

This position is permanent and full-time under the competitive service. It requires a Secret security clearance and does not offer promotion potential. The job falls under the job family series 0086 Security Clerical and Assistance.

Duties

1. Manages Security Forces squadron equipment. Directs, obtains, maintains, and provides for proper usage of Security Forces equipment in order to meet unit objectives. 2. Analyzes the combat readiness of the squadron through evaluation of training and equipment. Provides recommendations, critiques, and actual accomplishment of tasks such as formulation of local procedures and operating instructions, and unit administration. 3. Manages day-to-day Security Forces budget activities including tracking funds distribution, reconciling commitments/obligations, and reallocating organizational funds. 4. Manages the government credit card. Follows established guidelines for the conduct of the program. Keeps formal accounting records of each purchase.

  • Unit level management of the Defense Travel System as an approving official and management of the units Government Travel Card program.
  • This is a Physical demand effort, such as standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, and reaching.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, to include the Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Clerical and Administrative Support Positions for the GS Security Clerical and Assistance Series 0086.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-06, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes general administrative and/or clerical skills, practical knowledge of specific security objectives, programs, methods, and procedures, and skills in carrying out support tasks related to security administration. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-06 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of a range of security forces policies (i.e. physical, operational, electronic security), procedures, and practices. 2. Knowledge of overall security forces missions, functions, and structure. 3. Knowledge of a wide range of budgetary methods, practices, policies, procedures, regulations, and precedents. 4. Knowledge of automated data management systems. 5. Ability to conduct surveys, assessments, and evaluations of SF equipment inventory utilization to determine unit combat readiness and the return on investment value for future management decisions. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
